Steps Involved in Building Construction Process

Building construction is the process of constructing structure, such as buildings or other type of infrastructure. The building construction process includes many stages such as planning, estimates, site survey, plumbing work etc.

The steps involved in Building Construction Process are as follows:

Pre-Construction Steps

  1. Acquisition of Plot
  2. Building Plant
  3. Budget Estimation
  4. Permission from Authorities
  5. Hire a builder!

Building Construction Steps

  2. Excavation
  3. Foundation
  4. Plinth Beam and Slab
  5. Superstructure
  6. Bricklaying
  7. The lintel
  8. Roofs
  9. Electrical & Plumbing
  10. Exterior Finishes
  11. Interior Furnishes
  12. Flooring
  13. Painting

Pre-Construction Steps

1.    Acquisition of Plot

This is the most important step in building construction. The location of the land is the most crucial aspect to take into account before buying it. You should evaluate the location of the property and how close it is to amenities like highways, schools, parks, and other necessities according on your specific needs. The land should also be free from all land related issues.

2.    Building Plan

This is very important step in building construction process. Hire a professional architecture and create the building design as per your requirements and budget.

3.    Budget Estimation

A large financial investment is needed for construction of a building; therefore, a budget is required to track and maintain all the expenses. The details of the project are sent to a construction estimator once the design phase is over so that they may assess the building site and determine how much money will be required to buy the materials, tools, and labour to finish the structure.

4.    Permission from Authorities

Before starting construction on site, it is crucial to take all the necessary permission from local municipal body(authority). The permission required may vary from state to state.

5.    Hire A Builder

In order to ensure high quality building construction and on time project completion, a builder or contractor for construction must be carefully chosen. Choose a builder who has a good track record and has completed the construction on agreed time period. Sign a contract with all the important aspects like payment method, deadlines and costs covered in it. Cross check all the important details before signing it.

Building Construction Steps

1.    Site Cleaning and Levelling

The initial task of the building project’s construction phase is site preparation. This job includes levelling the ground area and eliminating undesirable barriers from the location, such as woods, rubbish, and tree roots.

2.    Excavation

After cleaning and levelling the construction site, the next step is excavation. This is done with the help of excavating machines.

3.    Foundation

Foundation is the lowest part of structure; it is where the building touches the ground and transmits the load of superstructure to the ground.

Given that the stability of the building depends on the foundation’s ability to do so, it makes the foundation a crucial part of the structure. No matter how many materials were used to build the construction, or how good were their quality, if it has a weak foundation, it will eventually collapse.

Hence, it demands great supervision and precision during construction.

4.    Plinth Beam and Slab

After the foundation work is done, an additional reinforcement called a plinth beam, and slab is installed. It offers safety to the building against moisture. It also keeps building stable during an earthquake.

5.    Superstructure

After the completion of Plinth Beam and Slab, the next step is construction of superstructure. The structure above the plinth level is known as a superstructure. The main component of the superstructure is a beam and column. The columns are built up to the slab level, and the frame for further construction is prepared.

6.    Bricklaying

Following the completion of superstructure, brick laying begun using a variety of materials, such as bricks, concrete blocks, fly ash bricks, etc., in accordance with the architectural drawing. Door and Windows opening are also done in this step according to the drawing.

7.    The Lintels

Lintels are reinforced cement concrete or stone beams provided over the door and window openings to support the masonry work over it.

8.    Roofs

Roof is the topmost part of the building which provides cover to the building from the top. The roof should be leakproof.

9.    Electrical & Plumbing

In a modern home, all of the wiring and plumbing are hidden. Only the outlets and pipes at their termini are visible because they are placed at this stage of the building’s development while the walls and slabs are still unfinished.

10. Exterior Finishes

After this work is finished, external finishing and plastering work begins. To stop rising humidity in the wall, waterproofing is also carried out. Another option for improving the elevation of the house is external cladding.

11. Interior Finishes

Internal walls are plastered with a smooth finish and flooring is done with tiles. Later on, the walls are painted or textured.

12. Flooring

After the completion of Interior and Exterior work, flooring work starts. There are different types of flooring available like ceramic tiles, wood, marble etc. which can be chosen as per requirements & budget.

13. Painting

This is the last step in the construction process. The building is painted to make it more beautiful and protect it from potential damage from sun and water.
